Somatic Therapy
Soma is a Greek word that means “ the body living in it’s wholeness.” Somatic therapy is a powerful approach to healing that taps into the deep connection between body and mind. It focuses on the reality that our bodies hold onto stress, trauma, and emotional pain, often in ways we are not consciously aware of. By using techniques that bring awareness to physical sensations—like breath-work, gentle movement, or touch—somatic therapy helps release these trapped energies, allowing you to heal not just mentally but physically and emotionally as well.
Imagine your body as a landscape where each experience, good or bad, leaves a mark. Somatic therapy is like a compassionate guide helping you revisit those places, not to relive the pain, but to release it. The purpose is to help you reconnect with your body, feel more grounded, and free yourself from patterns that no longer serve you. It empowers you to reclaim your inner strength, leading to a more vibrant, authentic life where you feel in harmony with yourself.
At its core, somatic therapy is about healing from within, recognizing that the body holds immense wisdom. It’s not just about talking through problems but also feeling and releasing them, bringing more vitality and peace into your life.
My Somatic Journey:
I began my journey to become a somatic therapist over 30 years ago. I was fortunate to meet a woman named Karen Beaumont, my movement teacher at Shakespeare & Company in the Berkshires where I grew up. Karen was a Somatic Educator and Movement Therapist. I was fascinated by her lessons and continued to shadow her for many years. She introduced me to the work of Trish Arnold and DR. Martha Eddy. I went on to study with other pioneers in this field, notably Peter Levine and David Grand. I hold certifications in Somatic Experiencing® Brainspotting® EFT ( Emotional Freedom Technique ) and Integrative Hypnosis®
SESSION TECHNIQUES
I draw from several modalities, working with how your nervous system responds in the moment and how experience is held in the body, as we track it together.
Somatic Experiencing®
Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, Somatic Experiencing is based on the understanding that trauma is not the event itself, but how the nervous system responds and organizes afterward. When a response to threat cannot fully complete, the system can remain in patterns of activation, shutdown, or chronic tension. This work focuses on carefully tracking sensation, activation, and timing, using principles such as titration and pendulation to avoid overwhelm. By working in small increments, the nervous system is able to gradually discharge held survival energy and reorganize, supporting increased regulation and stability.
Brainspotting®
Developed by Dr. David Grand, Brainspotting is based on the observation that eye position is linked to how experience is organized in the brain. Specific eye positions—“brainspots”—correspond to areas where emotional or somatic activation is held, often at a subcortical level. In a session, we identify a brainspot connected to what you are experiencing and maintain a steady gaze while staying aware of internal responses. This allows processing to occur without directing or analyzing it, supporting a shift in how the experience is held.
EFT Tapping (Emotional Freedom Technique)
EFT combines focused attention on a specific issue with rhythmic tapping on a sequence of acupressure points. This pairing allows you to stay connected to an emotional or physical experience while reducing its intensity. It helps regulate the stress response and supports the reconsolidation of emotional memory, so the same triggers no longer produce the same response.
Integrative Hypnosis®
Developed by Melissa Tiers, Integrative Hypnosis draws from multiple disciplines, including hypnosis, neuroscience, mindfulness, and cognitive and behavioral approaches. It is called “integrative” because it combines these into a flexible way of working, rather than relying on a single method. The approach is grounded in neuroplasticity—the brain’s ability to change through experience. By working with attention, state, and repetition, it becomes possible to interrupt automatic patterns and establish new ones.
