Erika Ackerman
I am a Somatic therapist, teacher, actor, and singer who has worked with artists for over 3 decades. Before moving to Los Angeles, I was a working actor in New York. I began my training in voice and movement at the age of 12 at Shakespeare & Company and began assistant teaching when I was 19. I was greatly influenced by my early teachers, Kristin Linklater, Tina Packer, and Karen Beaumont.
I began singing and dance lessons at the age of 10. I trained at the Boston Conservatory of Music and completed two years of graduate studies in Acting at Circle in the Square.
When I was 15, I began teaching women's fitness classes. I went on to study Pilates®, and Gyrokinesis. I did my aquatic training in Watsu® at Harbin Hot Springs in Northern California.
Since moving to Los Angeles in 1996, I have studied with the SITI Company in Suzuki Method, Antaeus Theatre Company with Dakin Matthews in Shakespeare Text, and in Fitzmaurice Voicework®, working closely with mentor teachers Catherine Fitzmaurice, Saul Kotzubei, and Michael Morgan.
I am certified as an Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework®. This highly individual and comprehensive approach forms the foundation of the work I do with voice. I am also a certified teacher of Vocal Yoga® which strongly supports my coaching of singers.
In the early 1990’s I began my journey to become a Somatic therapist. I shadowed Karen Beaumont , a somatic educator. I studied under her for many years. I became a Somatic Experiencing practitioner in 2017. I continue to train in this field.
In order to help people embody their full potential, I work as a somatic therapist , voice and movement coach , audition and on-set coach , and I offer private coaching, group classes, and workshops. I love travel, and in addition to my New York and Los Angeles based coaching, I offer workshops nationally and internationally.
